Mechanical Properties of Ceramics

... Please ignore the negative review - it was posted for the first edition, years before the second edition was published in April 2009. The second edition is specifically designed to address the deficiencies noted in the review. The two new co-authors (Professor Roger Cannon and myself) have updated the book based on our combined experience of over two decades teaching this subject at the undergraduate and graduate level.

I have been trying to get Amazon to remove the old review but I can not find any way to contact them! When they wake up and pay attention to this issue I hope that they remove both the old review and this counter to it. ...

Electricity, Fluid Power, and Mechanical Systems for Industrial Maintenance

... A few years back I graduated from a college in Toronto, which has a GREAT! Automation and Robotics program... it provided me with the building blocks to develop what many would consider a successful career. I learned a lot on the job, but found it difficult to ask the right questions to the problems I was having... After I came across this book, I found all of the questions... with the answers! I now keep a copy of the book on my bookshelf at home... and in the top drawer of my tool box... I occasionally load it out to new techs in the department... but I make sure they go get thier own copies! ...

Theory of Vibration: An Introduction (Mechanical Engineering Series) (Vol 1)

... Dr. Shaban has leaded the way with his books in vibration study. This book is an introduction to the concepts of vibration. It only covers the cases of single and two digree of freedom systems. Being so introductory, the book gives a very deep understanding to the concepts that anyone who is going to study vibration needs to know. Do not miss having this book in your library. ...

Boiling Heat Transfer And Two-Phase Flow (Series in Chemical and Mechanical Engineering)

... This is a very good book to have for an engineer who deal with two-phase flows and heat transfer, for those who design and operate nuclear reactors, thermal power plants and other thermal management systems. It provides a foundation, with an extensive collection of empirical formulae which could be useful if properly applied. What feels missing in this book, - and is general feature of BOOKS on two-phase flows and boiling - is the heavy empiricism, the lack of a scientific concept, the absence of robust theoretical treatment that one should possess after reading such a comprehensive compilation. That is to say, it is good for some one who knows the subject/field, not for teaching someone about boiling heat transfer and two-phase flows. ...

Mechanical Engineering 175 Problems & Solutions for the PE Exam (PE Exam Preparation)

... This book is very hard to follow. One of the reasons this is hard to follow is because is typed with a typewriter and the solutions to the problems are hand written. In today's world who publishes hand written books?

All the books in the Kaplan Mechanical PE series (I have the latest editions) are disappointing but this is the worst.

I prefer Lindenburg instead. It is better structured and presented. Also, the Lindenburg PE book seems to have fewer mistakes than their FE book. ...

High-Security Mechanical Locks: An Encyclopedic Reference

... Soon after High-Security Mechanical Locks: An Encyclopedic Reference was published, I purchased a copy as a reference tool since I am a high security lock collector. I consider the book to be an essential reference manual for high security locks insofar as it is comprehensive and detailed. The book fully explains the workings and components of high security locks. The explanations are in-depth and very understandable. The author has assigned a security rating (from 1 to 5 with 5 being the most secure) to each lock. I found this security rating to be very helpful and accurate in terms of the pick resistance of locks. The photographs in the book are outstanding and exceedingly informative. Having the book affords me the opportunity to learn more about high security locks from around the world that are extremely difficult to obtain and it assists me in expanding my lock collection and knowledge on the subject. Assembling such a vast array of information and photographs in one place concerning high security locks is quite an accomplishment. Other books concerning this topic have primarily discussed how to theoretically pick/defeat high security locks but have not delved into how such locks operate. Finally, there is a book available that offers comprehensive information on the inner workings and details of high security locks. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to all persons interested in high security locks.

Handbook for Cogeneration and Combined Cycle Power Plants

... While the author may be a recognized authority in the subject, this book could have been greatly improved by professional editing - it reads as if there was in fact no oversight because redundancy, weak grammatical structure, and mispellings are common. The narrative is not well organized either and appears as if transcribed from conversation. However, the greatest flaw of this book is its lack of rigor; a few equations oftentime provide much better clarity than attempts at descriptive illustration. There are lots of graphs, but it devolves onto the reader as to their analytical origins. This book was a huge disappointment and is not recommended. If you're not an engineer, but merely interested in the basic workings of a combined cycle plant, obtain this book from a library. Otherwise one would be much better served by a thermodynamics text and manufacturers' literature. The appalling lack of sound mathematical treatment renders this book nearly useless to an engineer. ...

Parametric Modeling with Mechanical Desktop Version 4 MultiMedia Tutorial

... This book will take you from knowing nothing about autocad or MDT to the point where you feel confident modeling. It is too the point with good exersises and layout. Very easy to understand. The only point it lost me is when it had me draw a title block to for representing a 2D drawing. I belive they assumed that you knew autocad before hand only in that instance but it was not vital. Further reading will be desired to learn more advanced techniques after you are finished. This program could not be summed up in one book anyhow it is too massive. ...

Introduction to Nuclear Power (Series in Chemical and Mechanical Engineering)

... "Introduction to Nuclear Power" is a well-written introduction to the mechanics and physics of commercial nuclear power reactors. The book has a very strong emphasis on thermal issues that can develop in nuclear plants, and lucidly explains the design considerations and challenges in various types of nuclear power plants (e.g. BWR, PWR, Magnox, AGR, etc.) as well as the engineered safety systems that make such reactors practical and safe to operate.

The book begins with a general overview of concepts and nuclear technology, then progresses rapidly into more detailed information. I found this book to have the best (and most comprehensible) introduction to two-phase flow issues in reactor cooling (p.70), which makes sense given the heat transfer angle the book frequently takes. Likewise the dangers of a positive void coefficient in Soviet RBMK plants (such as Chernobyl) are extremely well explained here (p.52), as are unique design features of these marginal designs. The explanation of the various type of control rods (manual and automatic control and regulation, radial power shaping, axial flux profiling, etc.) in an RBMK plant (p.53) is the best basic introduction to the subject I have yet seen.

There is a lot of text devoted strictly to safety systems and procedures, and a section dedicated to incidents in light water-cooled reactors, which is very helpful to those interested in nuclear safety. I especially appreciated the lengthy discussion devoted to Loss of Cooling Accidents (LOCA), to include small-break and large-break LOCA scenarios. These discussions are thoroughly illustrated, but some of the illustrations are difficult to grasp as the valve positions and liquid and steam phase flows are hard to see, and the discussion of the illustrations (pp.110-112) is not always totally clear. As a related aside, the book has sample problems at the end of the chapters in the event it is used as a college text. The examples used and subsequent questions are frequently discussed in inadequate detail to truly understand the issues being examined. They are fine to read and attempt to solve, but I generally found the discussions and sample problems at the chapter conclusions to be the weakest points in the book.

Overall this is a very good introduction to nuclear power that can be used as an introductory text or read by an educated reader with interest in the subject matter. The book's emphasis on safety and the complexity of heat transfer makes it especially valuable to safety professionals, and I recommend it without hesitation. ...

Detailed Mechanical Design: A Practical Guide

... Though small, this book is full of detailed ideas that will make your mechanical designs functional and fit well. Many will read this and get the idea that it does not have anything new, but once you start to read it - you begin to think about the implication of the ideas presented. When I first read this book all I could think of was my past designs that I was less than happy with. I wish I would have had this a lot earlier and of course, payed attention to it.

Will this book make you a better mechanical design engineer? Only if you want to be better. Part of the title contains the words "A Practical Guide" and it is just that. I highly recommend it. ...

High-Vacuum Technology (Mechanical Engineering (Marcell Dekker))

... Mr. Hablanian's book on High Vacuum Technology is perhaps one of the finest books on the subject that I have ever read. The book gets into the technical and theoretical aspects of the subject without getting in too deep. This book is a practical guide which allows the reader to understand the subtleties of vacuum without a dissertation on mathematics to get you there. There are equations to learn if so inclined, but the equations are useful in the application and calculus is not needed to apply. If you are looking to understand vacuum from an applications point of view, then this is the book for you. If you really want to delve into the theoretical nature of vacuum from a purely mathematical standpoint then get one of O'Hanlon's books. ...

Chemical Mechanical Planarization of Microelectronic Materials

... There are so many errors in this book that I cannot imagine how can anybody rely on any information contained here. The book is probably simply showing the current understanding of CMP, which is poor, but this still cannot justify bluntly bad science. The authors describe all important concepts of CMP like Preston equation, Pourbaix diagrams, but fail to clearly show the limited scope of their usefulness. They do not understand thermodynamics vs. kinetics of chemical processes either. At least half of the chemical equations are wrong, another quarter should not be there in the form presented. Who reviewed this book before publishing? ...

Making More Wooden Mechanical Models

... The authors have done it again, an inspirational book for woodworkers. Their are 13 designs of maechanisms which can be made in a workshop with basic woodworking tools. They tell you what they are and how they work. The projects range from easy to make to a little more difficult. They give you working drawings and templates, picture to show you step by step procedure, suggestions for choosing the wood, and each project is beautifully photographed which will inspire you to get started on such projects as a Steam Crank Mechanism,Wheel and Worm Gear Mechanism and more. These projects and the ones in their previous book would make great teaching aids for those who teach mechanical design. The one criticizm I have is that I am accustomed to working with dimentional drawings and not templates. This book is a pleasure just to page through and even a greater pleasur to get started on one of the machines and see it develop from scratch and then to operate it. ...
