Mechanics of Composite Materials, Second Edition (Mechanical Engineering)

... This book is moderate at best. We used it in a graduate class I am taking as an undergrad. First off, mistakes in the examples and text are not uncommon, and they are very annoying. Second, the examples have too many references to previous examples. It is very annoying to be flipping back 3 chapters to see how an answer was acheived. It is fairly easy to read and the organization is acceptable.

Don't get too excited about the software. It may work well, but there is no written or electronic help/support. ...

Mechanical Desktop 5: Parametric Modeling

... What a disappointment - this is a fairly decent book for Mechanical Desktop 5, but ALL instructions pertain to the command line prompt codes (not the toolbar).

For those of you who don't know what I'm referring to: Autocad gives you two main ways to execute commands - by typing in 8 to 10 letter codes (the old way), or by clicking on the toolbar buttons (the more user-friendly way). In some cases, you have no choice and must use the code commands, however this book makes no mention of the toolbar buttons that relate to what they're doing. Unless you are 'old school' and plan on trying to memorize hundreds of command codes, forget about this book - its no help. ...

Mechanical Connections in Wood Structures (Asce Manual and Reports on Engineering Practice)

... I built a fairly elaborate tree house for my granddaughters two years ago. It is a 12 x 12 foot square platform supported by the tree trunk at the center and by diagonal struts from the tree trunk to the corners of the platform. The hip roof has a hole for the tree trunk in the center. My daughter consulted an arborist who OK-ed the tree, which is a sturdy red oak with a roughly 2 1/2 foot diameter trunk. The location is near the Virginia coast where hurricanes are not uncommon, so the structure is bolted together with heavy stainless steel hardware and attached to the tree with 24 very large stainless steel lag screws.

Since life and limb were at risk here, I needed to do a competent design. An architect neighbor suggested designing for a 100 pound/sq. ft. live load. I knew how to do this from undergraduate engineering courses. However, setting load limits for the bolted joints between the wood members was a total mystery until I discovered this book. It is full of practical data on joint loading, hole locations, etc.

If you need to design a tree house or pole barn from scratch, this is an essential resource. ...

Fundamental Mechanics of Fluids (Mechanical Engineering (Marcell Dekker))

... This book is perfect for a graduate level fluid mechanics text book. It covers both inviscid and viscous flow. Currie proves the equations with a great level of accuracy. This book is an ideal companion to study for a qualifying exam. This is probably the most thorough graduate level text on fluid mechanics. Currie takes the time to prove everything very accurately. ...

Fluid Power Circuits and Controls: Fundamentals and Applications (Mechanical Engineering Series)

... This book is suitable for a single semester course in fluid power aimed at senior mechanical engineering students. Books on fluid mechanics will teach you how fluids move and the forces on them, but there is nothing about system design. This book shows you how to take the components you studied in fluid mechanics - pumps, valves, actuators - and build a system. In this book, each concept is presented along with a circuit diagram of an application at the time that the concept is introduced. As each component is discussed, it is placed in a circuit and some analysis of circuit performance is done as part of the discussion. This approach allows the reader to immediately apply what is being taught and encourages the reader to think about the component's operational characteristics in terms of the rest of the circuit. There are 14 laboratories that go along with the chapters to add to the applied nature of the book.

Chapter one is an overview, which is typical for such textbooks. Chapter 2 reviews the basic concepts learned in fluid mechanics - which is a prerequisite to understanding this book. Since the two key variables in a fluid power system are pressure and flow, chapter 3 discusses the various methods for controlling pressure in a circuit, and chapter 4 discusses the creation and control of flow. Chapter 5 discusses rotary actuators with a great deal of emphasis on motors. Hydrostatic transmission is covered in chapter 6, building on the material on pumps and motors in chapters 4 and 5, respectively. Chapter 7 presents an analysis of linear actuators and completes the presentation of key elements of a fluid power system. Chapter 8 is about temperature and contamination control. Characteristics of auxiliary components such as hoses, tubings, fittings, and reservoirs are covered in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 is the only chapter on pneumatics. It focuses on the difference in power transmission when using liquid versus gas. Servo valves are covered in Chapter 11 followed by a discussion of proportional valves in Chapter 12. Although chapters 11 and 12 do not require a background in control theory, you'll get more out of them if you have had a course in the subject.

This is a very good college book for the student that wants to split the difference between a shop manual and a terse academic tome. It has numeric examples throughout as well as example designs and listings of steps to take as part of the design process in order to make things ultra clear to the student. The book is also very well illustrated. I highly recommend it. ...

An Introduction to the Design and Behavior of Bolted Joints (Mechanical Engineering, Volume 97)

... This book provides an insightful and practical first look at the complex science of bolting. I found the first half of the book to be quite practical in familiarizing the reader with concepts that would be developed further in later sections. The author does a good job in giving the reader a look at several types of different design techniques, including the ones outlined by the german engineering society VDI. The book gives solid outlines to various design processes, but is not a textbook to tell you exactly how to design every joint. The reason for this is that bolted joints are extremely complex mechanical systems that are often simplified by quite conservative codified procedures. If the reader is looking for those codified design procedures, purchase books by the PVRC, ASME, etc. instead, but know that this book gives a wider perspective of the entire design process. ...

Mechanical Typewriters: Their History, Value, and Legacy

... There is a relatively small community of typewriter collectors, of whom I am one. Within this community there are subdivisions: those who collect the very early machines, those who collect a particular brand, those who collect a particular type (e.g. portables, desk machines, electrics). Because the typewriter was such a common device in both homes and businesses for almost all of the twentieth century, and because they were produced in the millions, many have failed to appreciate the impact these machines made on our society. The typewriter is the story of American ingenuity come to life. While there were foreign contributions to its development, the overwhelming percentage of patents and improvements were American. The typewriter freed countless women from a living of domestic servitude and allowed them to support themselves in a newly-created occupation. It changed both the nature and tempo of American office work, where efficiency and productivity were measurable.

This book focuses on the earliest machines prior to World War I. As many know, the early typewriter took many forms: some had the familiar typebars, while others used a rotating type wheel where letters were pressed to paper one at a time, some allowed the paper to move past the type, and still others allowed the paper to remain stationary while the typewriter moved! There were typewriters available for a few Dollars for the occasional home use, while the most mechanical models were quite expensive.

For the 'outsider', this book is a detailed and beautifully illustrated (in color) survey, by brand, of the available machines and their types in these early years. Many of these machines can still be found and purchased rather inexpensively, while the rarer machines are steadily increasing in value. The machines covered here are not for those of us who like to actually type--most don't have the standard keyboard we use today. These are machines for display.

This book will remain a valuable resource on the subject long after it has gone out of print. I would like to see a followup on machines covering the period between the Wars, when the industry as a whole continued development. This field represents American ingenuity at its best, and is a lesson for all of us in this regard. ...

Cabaret Mechanical Movement

... I recently read Rodney Peppe's "Automata and Mechanical Toys" and was so enthralled with the subject that I searched the Web and bought more books on the subject. I am an experienced craftsman, and wanted to build an automaton, so I collected some books on the subject.

Since the Cabaret Mechanical Theater is famous, I assumed that this book published by them would be definitive. Boy, was I wrong.

The subject is presented in an extremely elementary manner. Anyone who needs this level of handholding should not be allowed near power tools. The lack of detail is astounding.

For example, the chapter on shafts pointed out that if the hole is too small, the shaft will bind, and if it is too large, the shaft will wobble, so you've got to get it just right. Duh. Then it says nothing about how to do this, while other books talk about humidity changes, lateral grain expansion/contraction, the use of nylon bushings, et cetera.

I was really looking forward to the chapter on gears, since this is a difficult subject. Peppe's book didn't go much beyond templates and a rough discussion of meshing. Well, this book said "The design of gear teeth is a complex subject, beyond the scope of this book." AAAGH!!!

It was particularly frustrating that the numerous drawings of sample automata always had key parts of the movement obscured. There mght be a support post hiding things, or sometimes they were drawn from a perspective that put a huge gear in front, hiding everything else. Given the obvious skill of the artist, I can only conclude that this was a deliberate attempt to conceal details from the reader to prevent duplication. This is in sharp contrast to Peppe's book, which goes to great lengths to make sure that everything is presently clearly.

I was also annoyed at the huge waste of space on elementary cartoons at about a first-grade level. If the authors ever come out with a revised edition, I strongly suggest that they remove every one of the stupid, pointless cat cartoons that litter the pages, and fill the space with material that might actually be useful to the reader.

In summary, if this were the only book on the subject, I would reluctantly recommend it. However, given the fact that there are other books that present the same material in a vastly superior manner, I can find nothing whatsoever to recommend this book. ...

Arco Mechanical Aptitude and Spatial Relations Tests

... I bought this book ... when I received word from my dad that GM was taking referals for Industrial Mechanics and he turned my name in. I needed to quickly brush up on my mathematical and mechanical skills before taking the pre-employment exam. This book really let me down.

First - It didn't cover anything about how to do any of the shop mathematics until after you (the reader) had taken the practice exams. NO formulas, equations, NOTHING! And they DID explain it at the end of the exams, but not well enough to understand where you the reader screwed up.

Second - There were so many errors I lost count and closed the book never to read it again. Several of their answers were wrong; there were many typos and miscalculations. I don't buy a preparation guide for errors all it will do is confuse you as to if you are correct or forgot how to do arithmetic. I checked several of their calculations with a TI-90 calculator and the answers I received were not the same as theirs. ... ...

Mechanical Engineering: License Review

... I should have known better. This series of PE review books is peddled by ASME, which is a virtual guarantee that they will be overpriced and of of inferior quality.

Not surprisingly, this book (and it's sibling, Problems and Solutions) doesn't disappoint: as others have mentioned, the book is poorly organized, incoherent, and really just presents a disjoint collection of very industry-specific and sometimes impossibly hard exam questions.

The other disaster of this book is that it is all in USCS (English) units, yet now the exam problems are in either USCS or SI(metric), so you will get zero practice on SI units with these gems.

I found many of the problems nearly impossible to do in six minutes (let alone 30 or 40), unless, for example, you have spent the past 10 years working in the industry that the problem involves. Many of these problems are downright laughable, really, in how difficult they are. One of my favorites, for example, is 1.11 involving a ship being propelled along. The solution is over two pages long, and involves six integrals to evaluate. No kidding. Yep, you can bet the average test taker is going to punch right through that baby in six minutes (4 hour exam/40 questions = 6 minutes per question, on average).

If you want to really discourage yourself from taking the exam, then this book is for you! If you want a serious shot at passing, avoid Hamelink's books like swine flu and get the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual book by Lindburg, and focus on passing, rather than hopelessly misaligned "practice" problems that miss the mark completely. ...

Mechanical Behavior of Materials: Engineering Methods for Deformation, Fracture, and Fatigue (2nd Edition)

... Professor Dowling has done a remarkable job in presenting his material. "Mechanical Behavior of Materials" is pedagogically solid, enabling comfortable self-study for engineering students or practicing engineers. The coverage of deformation, static failure, and fatigue failure analyses are comprehensive, and yet sufficiently detailed to be applied in practice. Individual chapters are devoted to each of the three major fatigue analysis techniques, i.e., stress, strain, and fracture mechanics methods. Each are clearly and thoroughly explained, along with their applications and limitations. Also covered are a host of standard testing procedures, material properties for all major classes, plasticity, creep, relaxation, and material damping (a rarity). Altogether, Professor Dowling's book stands out as an exceptional example of what an engineering text should be. It is a very fine successor to an earlier, and still worthwhile work called "Stress, Strain, and Strength" by the late Professor Robert Juvinall. Another useful book, is "Metal Fatigue in Engineering", by Fuchs and Stephens.

Edison's Eve: A Magical History of the Quest for Mechanical Life

... Recounting in successive biographic episodes the ultimately pathetic efforts of men to build, with their own hands, artificial humans, Gaby Wood offers a uniquely female perspective. Especially since the mechanicals were often meant to be women. Although very learned, the author does not aim at an engineering evaluation. Rather, the stories she tells will elicit in psychologically sensitive readers a mixture of laughter and horror. As was the case with the audiences in front of which these creatures were presented, readers will first be fascinated but then will turn away in revulsion. ...
